Internship - Gender Data Analysis and Mainstreaming in WOAH operations - Data Integration and Analytics Department

The mission of the Data Integration and Analytics Department (DIAD) is to enhance WOAH's decision-making capacities by analysing data from diverse internal and external sources and providing evidence-based insights for WOAH, its Members and partners. Through advanced analytics, data integration and knowledge generation, DIAD supports data-driven decision-making across the Organisation.

In the past years, WOAH has been seeking to strengthen its knowledge and capacity on gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) in recognition of its impact on the realisation of human rights, organisational performance and the delivery of activities in the veterinary sector. GEDSI has been recognised in the enablers in the recently endorsed 8th Strategic plan of the organisation.

WOAH's Gender and Inclusion Task Force (GITF), through its Data Workstream, has generated datasets and analytical outputs that provide valuable insights into GEDSI dynamics across WOAH's ecosystem, particularly among external stakeholders such as PVS Pathway experts and Member-level systems. Disaggregated data has also been collected on several occasions, in particular for attendants to WOAH meetings. In parallel, WOAH has advanced efforts to mainstream gender considerations into its activities, including the piloting of gender-sensitive questions within PVS Pathway missions.

Despite these efforts, existing data and analytical outputs remain fragmented and underutilised. There is currently an opportunity to consolidate available datasets, strengthen the analysis of GEDSI-related evidence and generate actionable insights to support more inclusive programme design and implementation across WOAH and its Members.

In this context, DIAD, in collaboration with Institutional Affairs and Partnerships Department (IAPD), is offering an internship opportunity for a motivated student interested in GEDSI data analysis and evidence-based policy. Based at WOAH Headquarters in Paris, the intern will contribute to a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the use of GEDSI data within WOAH operations and supporting future organisational initiatives related to GEDSI.

Job Description

Positioning and reporting

Under the authority of Head of the Data Integration and Analytics Department (DIAD), and the direct supervision of the Senior Scientific Officer of DIAD. The intern will also be technically supervised by the Gender Technical Advisor of IAPD.

Job purpose : Master thesis project

The purpose of this internship is to support the consolidation, analysis and interpretation of existing GEDSI-related quantitative and qualitative data to generate evidence supporting inclusive policies, programmes and decision-making across WOAH.. The intern will contribute to integrating quantitative and qualitative information from multiple sources to better understand GEDSI dimensions affecting WOAH stakeholders, programmes and Member-level systems.

The internship will involve data harmonisation, statistical analysis, desk-based research and interpretation of findings through a GEDSI and intersectional lens , considering where relevant the interactions between gender, disability and other diversity characteristics.. The intern will also contribute to identifying data gaps, analysing available veterinary workforce data and formulating evidence-based recommendations to support GEDSI mainstreaming across WOAH activities and future strategic initiatives.

The intern will be strongly encouraged to participate in WOAH’s internal GEDSI groups, including the Gender and Inclusion Task force meetings and events, and the Disability and Health Equity group.

Missions and activities

• Consolidate and harmonise existing GEDSI-related datasets, reports and analytical outputs produced by WOAH departments, projects and working groups.
• Conduct quantitative analyses of available datasets to identify trends, patterns and GEDSI-related disparities across WOAH stakeholders and programmes.
• Support the design, implementation and analysis of internal and external surveys related to GEDSI, including questionnaire development, data extraction, statistical analysis and visualisation of results.
• This may include e setting up and administrating ,an internal survey on staff feedback on inclusion at WOAH.
• Conduct qualitative analysis of existing reports, studies and documentation related to GEDSI within WOAH and Member-level systems.
• Ensure methodological consistency and document assumptions, limitations and quality considerations associated with available datasets.
• Perform a desk review of relevant external literature and secondary data sources related to GEDSI dimensions within the veterinary workforce and animal health sector.
• Support the extraction, organisation and interpretation of available veterinary workforce data at national and regional levels.
• Identify data gaps, analytical opportunities and potential areas for strengthening GEDSI-responsive evidence generation within WOAH.
• Develop evidence-based findings and recommendations to support programme development, strategic planning and future GEDSI initiatives.
• Support the development of training materials, presentations and other learning resources for internal staff and external stakeholders to strengthen GEDSI awareness and capacity across WOAH and its Members.
• Contribute to the preparation of communication products for WOAH staff and management.
• Develop data visualisations and dashboards (where appropriate) to communicate key findings to WOAH audience and beyond if relevant.
• the Head of DIAD may, when necessary, assign to the incumbent, any other duties, responsibilities and activities within the intern’s area of competence.

Expected deliverables

• One final report compiling the scouted datasets and their analytical results presenting methodologiesy, findings, interpretations and recommendations.
• One factsheet summarising key findings and insights for WOAH-internal stakeholders including managers at decision-makers levels.
• A small article to be published in relevant platforms (WOAH newsletter, Animal echo or any other relevant platforms)
• A clean and documented harmonised dataset (or analytical database), together with metadata and methodological documentation. This includes analytical pipelines for recurring GEDSI datasets such as WOAH General Session participants.

Qualifications and Experience

Required Qualifications

• At least one year studying at Master's level (or equivalent) in data science, statistics, , international development, gender studies, political science, sociology or other relevant fields with strong focus on quantitative data analysis

Required Skills

Technical Skills

• Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including data management, statistical analysis and data interpretation.
• Experience using R and/or Python for statistical analysis, reproducible research and data visualisation..
• Ability to analyse and interpret data through a GEDSI lens.
• Experience in conducting literature review of peer-reviewed and grey literature on GEDSI within the veterinary and animal health sectors
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Interpersonal Skills

• Ability to work in an agile and collaborative environment.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Attention to detail and ability to synthesise information from multiple sources.

The post is a full-time internship position based at the WOAH Headquarters in Paris. It requires long hours in a seated position at a computer.
